About us

Better information is run by the Advicenow project to provide a forum for discussion of issues relating to law-related information and resources to help information producers improve their effectiveness and efficiency.

Advicenow is a project of Law for Life: the Foundation for Public Legal Education. Advicenow is an independent, not-for-profit information service providing accurate, up-to-date information on rights and legal issues. Over the last few years we've produced and tested over a hundred guides and features giving readers the knowledge and know-how to deal with scores of problems.

Advicenow are specialists in information provision and we have a wealth of experience working with government departments, voluntary organisations and frontline agencies. We have developed and tested strategies and procedures for producing successful information resources on rights, legal issues and other social welfare problems.

'Advicenow is the liveliest, least stuffy, most accessible and understandable website on legal matters that I've ever come across'
Marcel Berlins, The Guardian

Our resources are accessible and attractive. We don't just tell people about the law, we offer as much support and help for them to solve their problem as possible. Our guides acknowledge the stress readers are experiencing, and offer advice on the skills and techniques they need to solve their problem. We use a range of learning techniques to get the message across: clear, straightforward language, jargon-busters, case studies, diagrams, films, sound files, quizzes and cartoons.

We provide training in better information principles. We also provide a consultancy service that can help with any aspect of information provision or we can manage the production of your information for you.

Better information was funded by a grant from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the Ministry of Justice.

The Victoria Law Foundation in Australia has launched its own version of 'Better Information' based on Advicenow’s handbook of the same name. You can view the Victoria Law Foundation version here: Victoria Law Foundation 'Better Information Handbook'.
