Consultancy

Advicenow offers a flexible information consultancy service to provide as much or little help and support as you need.

Advicenow are specialists in information provision. We set out to break the mould of dull boring legal information, and have developed a distinctive style which sets out to grab attention and get the message across in the most effective way.

We have a wealth of experience working with government departments, voluntary organisations, and frontline agencies. We have drawn together existing good practice and have developed and tested our own strategies and processes for producing successful information resources on rights, legal issues and other social welfare problems.

What can we do for you?

We can offer consultancy on how to produce better information; provide training on how to do it; audit your information in order to suggest things you could improve and show you how to do it; or, where appropriate, do the job for you.

We can help with any stages of the production process from concept to evaluation, as required.
Our services include:

  • Audits of one or more pieces of the information you produce in order to provide tailor-made advice on how to improve them.
  • Advising on projects
  • Project management
  • Sourcing expert writers and fact checkers
  • Commissioning
  • Project design
  • Copywriting
  • Editing
  • Proof-reading
  • Piloting
  • Design
  • Web publishing and printing
  • Evaluation
  • Media management
  • Act as a critical friend

We can adapt our style and vary the level of our branding and editorial control, depending on the approach you want to take.

Who we are

Advicenow is an independent, not-for-profit information service providing accurate, up-to-date information on rights and legal issues. Over the last few years, we've produced over a hundred guides and features giving readers the knowledge and know-how to deal with scores of problems. If you need to produce effective and engaging information for the public, Advicenow can help.

'Advicenow is the liveliest, least stuffy, most accessible and understandable website on legal matters that I've ever come across'
Marcel Berlins, The Guardian

  • Advicenow is part of Advice Services Alliance, an independent charity which means that we're well connected with a wide range of advice services which know well how problems affect people and can test materials in context.
  • We have excellent contacts with a network of experts, writers, and peer reviewers.
  • As a small organisation, we can offer competitive prices and turn projects around quickly.

Projects

Advicenow has worked with a range of different organisations to produce materials for a variety of audiences, for example:

  • The Legal Services Commission commissioned us to produce 18 in-depth guides for members of the public. Topics include debt, divorce, grievance procedures, discrimination, compensation, and asylum.
  • The Department of Constitutional Affairs (now the Ministry of Justice) commissioned Advicenow to run the LivingTogether campaign, raising awareness amongst cohabitees of the myth of common-law marriage. Download figures for LivingTogether guides total more than 1.5 million.
  • Advicenow worked in partnership with other advice sector organisations in a Progress Towards Equality funded programme to produce information to help people recognise discrimination, realise that they don't have to put up with it, and give them guidance on what to do about it.
  • The Department of Constitutional Affairs (now the Ministry of Justice) commissioned Advicenow to produce a booklet for advisers about the new Mental Capacity Act.
  • Advicenow worked in partnership with other advice sector organisations in a Department for Trade and Industry (now the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) funded project to produce a self-tutor pack for advisers on age discrimination.
